Product Description
Magnesia Cupel 96% MgO Round Refractory Cupel for Fire Assay Gold Silver Analysis
96% MgO High Purity Magnesia Cupel for Fire Assay Gold and Silver Analysis
Y&X magnesia cupels are engineered for the cupellation step of fire assay—the stage that most directly determines analytical accuracy. Made from 96% high purity magnesium oxide (MgO) with a special fluxing agent and formed by high pressure molding plus high temperature sintering, every cupel offers a smooth surface, uniform shape and high mechanical strength that resists cracking, pitting and lead spitting at high temperature.

What Is a Magnesia Cupel?
A cupel is a shallow, porous refractory crucible used in the cupellation stage of fire assay, holding the lead button while absorbing molten lead oxide (PbO). In the furnace at about 900°C the lead button melts, lead reacts with oxygen to form PbO, and capillary action of the porous cupel absorbs most of the liquid PbO. Gold and silver, which resist oxidation, remain on the cupel surface as a bright, dense precious metal bead.
Why Cupel Quality Matters
  • Insufficient absorption leaves PbO in the bead and affects gold and silver purity and weighing accuracy
  • Cracking or pitting at high temperature can cause melt leakage and sample loss, invalidating the assay
  • Poor batch consistency increases scatter between parallel samples and fails laboratory quality control
Key Advantages
  • 96% high purity MgO formula with a special fluxing agent for superior absorption
  • Smooth surface and uniform shape for repeatable batch results
  • High mechanical strength: no cracking or pitting during cupellation
  • Absorbs more than 70% of its own weight in lead oxide
  • No lead spitting or splashing, for high precious metal recovery and low loss
  • Excellent thermal shock resistance, ready to use without pre-drying
  • Not affected by atmospheric humidity, no freezing tendency in any climate
  • Precious metal beads release easily from the cupel wall
  • In-house laboratory testing on a regular schedule for traceable batch quality
  • Sizes, packaging and private label support available on request

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Cupel vs cupel brick—which should I choose?
A: A cupel is a single round dish for small or individual samples; a cupel brick is a multi-cavity block that cupels many samples per run. Same material, same principle. Under 20 samples/day use cupels; over 20 use a cupel brick.
Q: How do I choose the right cupel model?
A: It depends on furnace chamber size (max outer diameter) and lead button weight (capacity). 20-30 g → model 2X or No.3; 50-80 g → the 7A or No.8 series; over 100 g → No.10 and above. Y&X offers nearly 20 standard models plus customization—contact us for a recommendation.
Q: Do magnesia cupels need pre-drying?
A: No, they go straight into the furnace. High purity magnesia gives excellent thermal shock resistance, so a room-temperature cupel can be placed directly into the hot furnace.
